"We've Always Done It This Way" Is a Symptom—Not the Problem

Over the past few months, I've been challenging myself to write more—not because I have all the answers, but because writing forces me to think more deeply about the work I do every day.

This latest article started with a phrase I've heard countless times throughout my career:

"We've always done it this way."

For years, I assumed it reflected resistance to change.

But as I thought about it more, I realized the real issue is often something else entirely.

Sometimes we've simply lost the "why."

When that happens, processes get passed from one person to the next, traditions become routines, and eventually no one remembers why something started in the first place.

That realization has changed the way I think about leadership, organizational culture, and even my own work.
